Have you ever wondered why having a Veteran on your Staff is valuable?

Did I mention how much I LOVE SEARS. Way back when I used to work for the shoe department in Sears in the Burlington, NC, they had these really awesome shoes and I wanted them, shoes are my passion. They always have great looking clothes and styles. I love that store and I really love them now, they are standing behind our military families and veterans. Which means so much more to me now that this way of life is my way of life. According to the Department of Labor Statistics in October 2012, the unemployment rate among veterans has dropped to 7.2% in 2012.

Hiring veterans into the workplace strengthens any organization. I have noticed that over the past few years more companies are becoming veteran friendly.  As I know for veterans and military spouses companies that hire them are finding veterans and military spouses loyal, dedicated and highly motivated leaders.

Veterans have the training, work ethic and skills to immediately add value to any business.

In the past year, Sears has made more than 4,440 military hires and will continue to make hiring military veterans a priority. As President Obama mentioned in his inaugural address, a decade of war is ending – meaning troops will be coming home looking for jobs. Sears is one the nation’s strongest corporate supporters of U.S. Military Families – a tradition since World War I.

SEARS has a longstanding history of employing veterans and dedication to initiatives such as the Veterans Opportunity to Work (VOW) act. Some of the many ways Sears is dedicated to military service members and their families include:

  • Employment of more than 30,000 veterans, of which 1,500 are actively serving in the Reserve and National Guard.
  • Offering military pay differential to full-time associates who are reservists, serving on active duty.
  • Affiliating with Rebuilding Together, to renovate more than 1,100 homes of injured veterans.
  • Supporting active-duty soldiers during the holidays by accepting donations in-store and online through the Heroes at Home Wish Registry.

Sears is partnering with the White House initiative, Joining Forces Mentoring Plus™, a national e-mentoring program connecting women veterans and military spouses with professional women to navigate the path to success in the civilian workplace.

Joining Forces Mentoring Plus provides resources, including mentors, subject matter experts (SMEs), and online connections to women veterans and military and veteran spouses to assist them in obtaining meaningful employment and a successful career of interest to them. This mentoring model is based on career and workforce development goals.

Please check out Sears and Joining Forces Mentoring Plus for more information on this great opportunity.
